Our company, EatSafe, is developing a smart allergy scanner as an efficient method to help people who suffer with allergies, people of the Islamic faith and people who are potentially vegan to solve the problem of allergy sufferers having to navigate through detailed product labels and extensive ingredient lists to attempt to identify potential allergens, as well as Muslims trying to see whether a product is halal or not.

Challenges
People being unable to read detailed product labels. People being unable to understand ingredient lists. People not knowing what products are suitable for them e.g., halal or vegan. People can't read the language the ingredients are written in.
Solution
Our solution is to produce our allergy scanner that will be equipped with the necessary tools to tackle these challenges e.g., a vast allergy library, halal product and vegan product identification, easy portability, accurate barcode scanning.
Use Case
People of all ages suffering from allergies on a daily basis - a mother with a 6 year old son who has a severe peanut allergy, when she goes shopping she struggles to clearly read the labels on food products, which puts her son at risk of having an allergic reaction to the food she buys.

THE PROCESS
PROTOTYPE DESIGN
Our current prototype contains an ESP-32 module with an LCD screen that displays information on it. We also have a barcode scanner connected to the ESP-32 by wires in order to power it and make it function. When we scan barcodes with the scanner, the serial number is displayed.

Unlike competitors, it offers real-time barcode scanning, halal and vegan certification, and a vast allergen database, making it more versatile than existing solutions like Nima Sensor and Yuka. the scanner enhances food safety, simplifies ingredient checks, and saves time. Its impact extends beyond consumers, offering potential adoption by supermarkets and restaurants for improved transparency.
RESULTS
FINAL PRODUCT
We took feedback from mentors and users to gather what needed to change and what was good about our product. We made plans to create both the hardware and software for the product. We then conducted some final tests to ensure it functions as intended.
