FRAME ON

A smart picture frame manufactured using recycled materials with its display scavenged from an existing tablet. Promoting the idea of breathing second life into older devices by reusing their custom-made components and overall reduction of e-waste polluting the Earth. As the digital innovation industry continues to evolve, businesses must stay abreast of the latest trends and leverage innovative solutions to effectively reach and engage their target audiences. FrameON operates within this dynamic landscape, offering a smart picture frame to promote the idea of reducing, reuse, recycle within the constraints of our knowledge of current technology.

UN SUSTAINABILITY DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Empowered and Driven:
Delivering Solutions for Global Issues

Good Health and Wellbeing – FrameON’s team demonstrates commitment to simulate the experience of taking your photographs like you were just there. Empowering people to joyfully reminisce memories stored in our ecological picture frames will aid in a positive mindset. It is no secret that mental health is imperative to maintain and having memories displayed in your office or bedroom will you keep you in a good mood throughout the day!

Responsible Consumption and Production – FrameON’s team believes in breathing second life to hardware without a soul. With this endeavour in mind, our smart picture frame is made using commonly available hardware combined with a 3D printed recyclable plastic shell restoring the comfort and purpose the display had during its first life, only further improved.

Climate Action – FrameON’s primary mission is to salvage far and wide; the landfills and the waters of functional display technology and restore the glory the touch-capable display once had. Our intention is to send a message to all large organizations to prevent the exploitation of cheap hardware that meets the same fate.

DESIGN STORY

Challenges
During our project, we have encountered many challenges, for example, display technologies can be exceedingly difficult to work with depending on the damage, we are hoping to come across perfectly working displays to create our product. We are also limited by our technical knowledge due to being a small team consequently, our budget is small as we are a start-up company. Another tough obstacle in our way is potentially being outsold by retailers on platforms such as Amazon due to their cost-cutting measures and their convenience. Our challenges continue as we are limited by the equipment available to us at one time, 3D printing is a lengthy process.
Solution
We are looking towards sponsors for our company and further projects that impact the planet we share. Receiving a larger budget would allow us to continue development and salvage operations which result in the creation of our magnum opus. To further expand our company, we would like to create partnerships with companies that deal with e-waste removal and be able to hand over the hardware we are seeking. Our knowledge of the market share allowed us to realise that our product has a competitive price and the largest long-term environmental impact. We can utilise the STEAMhouse as part of our 3D printing operation.
Use Case
The purpose of our project is to reduce e-waste by reusing existing display technologies such as used tablets that are non-recyclable and repurpose them to develop a smart picture frame with the bonus of power efficiency using a proximity sensor. We also offer vast customisation of the exterior 3D printed shell to attract new buyers of the product that will help save the environment at a low cost.

THE PROCESS

PROTOTYPE DESIGN

Our prototype (SPFX-0) was rendered using 3D software to provide a full view of the Smart Picture Frame from all angles. We use this model as our backbone reference for the frame’s physical appearance. From our images, it is easy to infer the general idea of our project and the product we are attempting to push into market. While our 3D model does not feature any significant details such as colour or wires, this will be featured in the images of our physical prototype (SPFX-1). This early slideshow of images will provide potential customers with the potential this project has to offer and keep them invested for future improvements.

PLEDGE

Impact on the market

After analysing multiple competitors, most monopolistic businesses have little care about the usage of materials harmful to the environment we all share. As a direct consequence, this leads to an increase in e-waste ending up in landfills and potentially in our forests, beaches, and oceans. There is a market gap where many electronics cannot be reused or repurposed, therefore we would like to saturate this gap with our competitively priced solution that rewards you with a product purchase and peace of mind acknowledging the contribution towards a greener planet.

RESULTS

FINAL PRODUCT

We have obtained a modified tablet screen to be able to use for our prototype. This tablet screen is connected to the Raspberry Pi as a compute module is needed for the processing of images received locally onto the device.
