Our product is a self-sustaining electric bicycle. The main concept of our product is that it will generate electricity from simply riding the bicycle as normal. This energy is then stored and can be used to power the bicycle using electricity, therefore creating a hybrid electric bicycle which does not have any impact on the environment while also keeping the benefits of traditional bicycles.

This bicycle perfectly aligns with the UN (United nations) sustainability goals where it promotes goal number 3, good health and well being, which is through promoting traditional bike riding, goal number 11, sustainable cities and communities, which promotes a sustainable and alternative transportation method, goal number 7, affordable and clean energy which is through the electric generation method and finally goal number 13, climate action, which is implemented through the electricity generation, where it generates the electricity through cycling, therefore removing the need of fossil fuels.

DESIGN STORY

Challenges
Currently, electric bicycles rely on charging from specific stations or outlets, which limits their range and also their practicality. This can be inconvenient, especially for riders with limited access to charging points. Additionally, relying on standard electricity for this, contributes to the emissions of greenhouse gases which contributes negatively to the environment. This can also contradict the core idea of a bicycle, which is supposed to be a clean, emission free transportation method which also encourages good health and well being.
Solution
Our product aims to tackle these issues by creating a self sustaining electric bicycle. This product features an electricity generation method which utilises pedal power. Unlike traditional e bikes, this bicycle contains a built in electricity generator where it captures the electricity produced when pedalling. This electricity is then stored and used to power the bike where it can be ridden automatically using electricity.
Use Case
``Since the electricity generation requires pedalling, the customer can still ride this bike in a traditional manner, which would bring in all the benefits from riding a normal bike, such as the improved health benefits. This pedal system allows the customer to ride the bike as normal and when they like, they can change to the automated system, which would transport them using electricity.  This system also allows for long journeys where traditional bikes would make the customer feel tired or fatigued after a long journey and electric bikes can only do a certain distance where it would need to be recharged. Since this system incorporates both a traditional and electrical system, which does not need to be recharged from traditional methods, it means the range will be significantly improved. This would also encourage more people to use bikes in their day to day life which also reduces reliance on cars, therefore promoting more sustainable cities and communities.  ``

THE PROCESS

PROTOTYPE DESIGN

“This simulation is a prototype of how the actual system will work. The 2 servo motors represent the electric motors that will be used. The switch and LCD represent the display which will control the system and the ultrasonic sensor represents the sensors that will detect for any incoming objects to ensure the bike is safe while it is riding using the energy.
The prototype system has 2 modes, manual where the user will ride the bike as normal and this will generate electricity that can be used in the auto mode, which is the mode where the bike will use the energy that was generated to ride the bike in the same way how an electric bike would.”

Impact on the market

Our product aims to tackle the main issues which arise from electric bicycles. Currently, electric bicycles rely on fossil fuels for energy. Bicycles should be a sustainable alternative of current transportation methods, however currently they still rely on these fossil fuels for energy. In contrast, standard bicycles can only be used for long distances if the user has enough energy to do so, since after a while most users would feel fatigued or tired, therefore creating another barrier for this transportation method. Our product tackles both these issues where riding this bicycle as normal produces electricity. This electricity is then stored and when the user wants, they can simply change to electric. This means that not only is it sustainable, it is also reliable for long journeys, where if the user feels tired or fatigued they simply change to electric and when they want, they simply change back to riding the bicycle traditionally. Therefore, this solves both problems in this market and users can enjoy all the benefits of traditional bicycles while also having the ease and efficiency of electric bicycles.
