About Purrfect Pet Feeder

The Purrfect Pet Feeder is a smart device, and an innovative solution to ensure that pets receive the proper quantities of food and water, while also monitoring their weight. It uses sensors to detect the weight of the bowls, to correctly be able to dispense the food and water based on if they are empty, and track pet health. Over a 12-month period, our plan is to test the automatic feeder’s market potential, improve operations, and build a strong financial foundation. By focusing on product development and sustainability, the project aims to establish itself as a leading solution in the pet technology space.

Zero hunger: while that is aimed towards humans, this product does provide zero hunger for animals, keeping them fed at the correct times, and ensuring that they don’t miss a meal if no one is home. Clean water and sanitation: The pet feeder dispenses clean water for pets to ensure that they have clean drinking water at all times. Responsible consumption: the pet feeder measures and monitors the amount of food that is dispensed and reduces waste. Industry, innovation, and infrastructure: The feeder provides tech innovation, contributing to sustainable infrastructure and smart systems.

Solution

To tackle these challenges, we plan to focus on making sure the components are all working as one piece, instead of working on each separately. Each functions correctly when used separately but not together, so we plan to work on it all together as a group. This would tackle both of the other challenges as well, as we can focus on ensuring the sensors work, and will work better together as a group. Focusing separately is causing issues with members doing their parts, so if everyone was to work together, we can make sure everyone is working.

Use Case

Smart pet feeding for busy pet owners: Many pet owners adults with full time jobs, to be able to provide for themselves, as well as their pets. Full time jobs take up a large portion of the day, with work sometimes leading to overtime hours as well. Many have to leave for their jobs early in the morning, either to commute or to make it on time. Because of this, these pet owners are unable to be home to feed their pets. While animals can go hours without eating, this is distressing and can cause issues in the long run. They thrive on scheduled days, which include their feeding times. With the purrfect pet feeder, this isn't an issue. Pet owners are able to schedule feed their pets, and have fresh water dispensed when the bowl is empty, ensuring that their pets are well fed and taken care of.

THE PROCESS

PROTOTYPE DESIGN

This prototype is of our purrfect pet feeder, designed to provide pets with food and water at scheduled times or on demand, ensuring consistent care even when owners are unable to be there. Built using an Arduino Uno, sensors that dispense their food and water, and a Bluetooth module that allows real time communication with a custom mobile app.
People can set scheduled feeding times or manually dispense food and water directly from the app. The prototype also includes a time-based system to control portion sizes and prevent overfeeding. All components are connected using simple electronics and can be housed in the actual structured feeder, which is big enough for cats and dogs.
Designed with sustainability in mind, this feeder reduces food waste and promotes responsible pet ownership. The way it is built allows for easy maintenance and cleaning. The smart feeder is ideal for busy individuals, frequent travelers, or pet parents who want peace of mind knowing their pet’s basic needs will always be met, anytime and anywhere.

RESULTS

FINAL PRODUCT

The process of developing the Purrfect Pet Feeder started with us thinking about an issue that is common among many people. Pet owners have the challenge of feeding their pets on time, especially those who are busy or travel quite frequently. Our goal was to create a product that could automatically dispense both food and water at scheduled times, or manually if the pet owner chooses to do so. We started by creating a few designs of the product and seeing what worked best. We also compiled a list of key components that we would need, such as the Arduino Uno as the main part of the system, food and water dispensing mechanisms, and the materials needed to build that actual product. We used a breadboard as well to be able to test the connections before we moved into direct wiring. The system was programmed using Arduino IDE, and it included features like scheduled dispensing and manual controls. Next was to work on building the physical product, with some 3D printed parts that were needed for dispensing. We thought about sustainability while working on this product, making sure that we were following the goals that we wanted to make sure were met. The final prototype is a functioning pet feeder that meets all of the goals we set in place.
