About Quantum Stellars

Our company Quantum Stellars is developing a smart bench which will shelter the homeless, allowing them to rest and interact with other members of society by using its reactive system to keep users sheltered from the weather.

UN SUSTAINABILITY DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Empowered and Driven:
Delivering Solutions for Global Issues

We aim to meet several sustainability goals with our smart bench product, such as combatting poverty by giving the homeless a temporary refuge until they can get a stable income. It could also help maintain their health and wellbeing by protecting them from weather-induced diseases and improve social wellbeing by integrating them more into their communities. The final product should also contain a water filtration system which would grant access to reliable sources of clean water and a solar panel to incorporate clean energy into its design. It also provides great infrastructure to communities and promotes job growth and opportunities. It is designed in its entirety to reduce inequality by giving the less fortunate a fair chance.

THE STORY BEGAN

DESIGN STORY

Challenges

- The rise in homelessness and what they suffer from due to being so exposed and vulnerable often.
- The isolation they suffer from due to being neglected by society, which could cause them to be pushed towards crime
- The lack of consistency in their life, which prevents them from being able to establish themselves in society and regain stability in their life.

Use Case

It is a bench that can be used by others, although its features are specifically catered to the homeless; for example, it serves as a reusable refuge for them. It will adjust itself depending on certain conditions, for example it will flip its roof if it is getting too sunny or if it begins to rain and will switch on lights if it is dark. It will activate heaters if it gets too cold and will filter water using a filtration system so that users can drink if they need it.

Solution

A reactive smart bench that will adjust itself depending on the conditions of the area such as its climate, weather or temperature. This would not only keep the user safe, but encourage others to socialize while sharing it, enabling a stronger sense of community and giving the homeless a chance to possibly network and form stronger bonds or even partnerships.

TECHNOLOGIES

List of Essential Tools and Technologies

THE PROCESS

PROTOTYPE DESIGN

Our prototype will consist of only the bare components; all connected to a breadboard. It will prioritize the functions over its appearances. As such, many of the bare parts, such as the LDR, temperature sensors, resistors, LEDs and the motor will be in the open and exposed; however, this is not a problem as this version’s only purpose is to test and refine our product.

PLEDGE

Impact on the market

A lot of smart bench technologies that currently exist do not provide a tailored reactive system that protects users from the environment, which suggests that our product could have a very high impact on our target audience if we get the right investors and if it is installed in the right places. It has the potential to be a great success.

RESULTS

FINAL PRODUCT

Our final MVP will have a roof part which will slide onto the motor. This would most likely be 3D printed but could also be laser-printed. The other parts will be protected by a box which would be laser-printed with an opening in the roof so that the LDR and temperature sensors could work in the MVP. The motor would rest on a platform so that it could mimic the functions of the actual bench. A miniature model of the seats would rest beneath this roof.
