About Smart Dose

Smart dose is a smart pill dispenser that helps track medicine non compliance among user, especially people with alzheimer’s and dementia.

This is done through a smart weight that will be able to tell if the pills have been taken based of if there is a change in weight. This will also feature a vibration motor as a non invasive method of reminding users when there are pills need to be taken. if Smart dose detects that the pill hasn’t been taken after the given time period it will send a notification to their doctors or careers.

Challenges

1.getting the weight consistently correct
2.getting the vibration motor to function
3.possibility of contacting doctors or careers

Solution

1.use an expected weight range e.g.250mg to 200mg, record a baseline weight and include a feature that prompts weight recalibration periodically
2.connect the motor to a transistor as microcontroller might not be able to handle the motors current head-on
3. build an app

Use Case

the Smart Dose pill dispenser will will first start with the time the medication will be taken being set e.g 2pm, then when it reaches the given time the vibration motor will activate to alert the user to take their medicine. After a given time frame e.g 5 minutes the pill dispenser will heck the weight to see if there is a change, if there is then the code will reset to the next given time for the pill to be taken. If the weight hasn't changed then the buzzer will go off again and if the weight still stays the same it will send a message to a career or doctor either through an SMS or app notification.

THE PROCESS

PROTOTYPE DESIGN

Smart does is an automated pill dispenser that is designed to improve medication adherence by tracking the user’s does in real time. It uses a raspberry Pi as its controller paired with a load cell to measure the pill weight and confirm weather the user has taken their medication. when its time for a dose the device will trigger the vibration motor to alert the user. If the system detects no change in the pill weight after a set period of time it will assume that the dose has been missed and will send a alert to a care giver or doctor.

Smart Dose will be able to automatically alert caregivers when doses are missed, this would reduce hospitalisations and give families peace of mind, creating opportunities in direct consumer sales, insurance partnerships, and senior care facilities which would position it as a practical life saving tool in growing digital heath.

RESULTS

FINAL PRODUCT

1. the user or care giver will load the pills into the dispenser and prompt the dosage time via a simple interface(physical buttons or a app)
2. at the scheduled time the vibration motor will buzz to alert the user.
3.if the pill weight decreases within the given window e.g. 10 minutes, the system will log a successful dose.
4.if there is no change in weight then it will be flagged and the caregiver will be notified
5.miseed doses will be recorded for log term tracking and repeated misses can trigger escalated alerts like a call to the clinic
