About SolarSip

We are building a solution to give individuals access to purifying their own water in areas of the world where clean water is not readily available. While focusing primarily on charitable applications for those less fortunate, we also aim to sell our product to the masses in order to build funds to maintain production and help those who need it.

UN SUSTAINABILITY DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Empowered and Driven:
Delivering Solutions for Global Issues

Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation: Your product helps ensure availability and sustainable
management of water by purifying it using UV light and a debris filter.

Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy: By using a solar panel to power the system, your product promotes access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy.

Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being: The UV light sterilisation ensures that the water is safe to drink, promoting good health and well-being by reducing the risk of waterborne diseases.

Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production: Your product encourages responsible consumption by using renewable energy and providing a sustainable solution for clean water.

Goal 13: Climate Action: By utilising solar energy, your product contributes to climate action by reducing reliance on fossil fuels and lowering carbon emissions.

THE STORY BEGAN

DESIGN STORY

Challenges

- Lack of clean water
- Increase in plastic litter, specifically plastic bottles
- Chemical treatment used to clean water traditionally is often harmful for health in the long run

Solution

- Our water bottle will have a built in method to purify unclean water by a two-step filtration process: First, collected water will go through a physical, traditional filter which will capture any debris and solid particles. Then, at the push of a button, a UV light will kill any bacteria and microorganisms living in the water, making it safe to drink.
- The water bottle will be made with high quality durable materials which ensures longevity and will take a step towards reducing reliance on one time use, soft plastic water bottles that often get disposed of incorrectly or littered.
- A natural filtration process utilising a paper filter, and a UV light (which doesn't directly make contact with skin) is a much safer alternative to chemical treatment which is not always removed from the water but is consumed in large amounts by the masses.

Use Case

This product can be used by hikers and campers, where storage space is preferred to be spared to carry as much necessary tools and items as needed. It is also beneficial to them as they will not have to worry about hoarding gallons of water; they will be able to purify any water on the go with just a water bottle. The product can also be used in day to day life because it can hold 4L, making it perfect for taking out and about.

THE PROCESS

PROTOTYPE DESIGN

The bottle will be created from highly durable, renewable materials.
It contains a solar panel on the top of the bottle which is constantly generating energy from sunlight.
This is then charging a rechargeable battery which is used to power a UV light and a microcontroller which controls the functions of the components.

PLEDGE

Impact on the market

SolarSip is designed to tackle the global water crisis, where over 2.2 billion people lack access to safely managed drinking water (UNICEF and WHO, 2021). Using solar power, it provides a sustainable solution for clean water, especially in regions facing severe water scarcity, a challenge that affects nearly half of the world's population for the year (UN-Water, 2021). The renewable energy market, which is projected to grow to over $1.1 trillion by 2030 (IEA, 2023), offers a promising space for SolarSip to thrive. By combining clean energy with essential water purification, SolarSip not only addresses a critical need but also aligns with the growing demand for eco-friendly and innovative solutions. It’s a practical step toward a greener future while making a real difference in people’s lives
