About Sprinkle Sense

Sprinkle Sense is our smart irrigation system which has been made to optimize water usage for gardens and agricultural spaces. The project tackles the issues and UN sustainability goals of water waste by using real-time data from soil moisture and sensors to control watering. By ensuring plants receive just the right amount of water, Sprinkle Sense helps save resources and supports sustainable gardening.

We chose Goal 12 and Goal 13 because Sprinkle Sense directly supports both. It reduces water waste through smart, data-driven irrigation and supports eco-friendly practices that help fight climate change. The system encourages sustainable resource use and contributes to a greener future.

Challenges

Integrating different systems - as we're using both Arduino and raspberry pi and having multiple people work on different parts has posed challenges at times. Finding a design for our stats website - struggled to find how we wanted our website to look Very different schedules - meant that finding time outside of uni to work on project was a challenge

Solution

By using regular testing to make sure the Arduino and Raspberry Pi are working together successfully Using a simple, clean template and found similar inspiration from previous past irrigation systems We learnt to coordinate our schedules and collaborate through Microsoft Teams.

A flower/plant owner who wants to maintain a healthy garden or plants without wasting water and finding a way to monitor soil conditions without constantly being present.

THE PROCESS

PROTOTYPE DESIGN

The prototype includes LCD screen, Soil Moisture Sensor, Breadboard, LEDs and Arduino as well as separately we have the Raspberry Pi separately included to allow live web stats.

Impact on the market

The impact our product has on the market it allows farmers/garden owners and flower and plant enjoyers to be able to water their plants and crops without the fear of under watering or over watering.

RESULTS

FINAL PRODUCT

First step was collecting the components needed most importantly the soil moisture sensor connected to the Arduino to read the data about soil moisture sensors. The raspberry pi then collets this data and processes it allowing it to be displays and hosted on a web interface. The Raspberry Pi runs a web servers with Flask to host stats and system status.
