About Team Macbook

Our project is based off a smart door lock aimed to increase both safety and security. It has a wide range of use from household doors to private company rooms containing sensitive equipment. The lock contains a fingerprint scanner and a NFC tag which can both be used to open the lock allowing multiple people access, not restricting it to a single person. This allows any specific amount of people to unlock the door depending on the user setting.

Decent work and economic growth- Smart door lock can be used to encourage work from home jobs such as an air b and b where the host can program the lock to the guests pass and/or fingerprint. This boosts comfortability and convenience for both the host and the guest.

Sustainable cities and economies- The smart door lock can be used to decrease crime rate as it locks automatically, meaning when the door is closed it cannot be opened as opposed to a standard door lock which requires the key to be turned for it to be locked. It also can increase tech-driven jobs in the IoT development of the lock.

Challenges

We came across some issues in terms of putting the the smart door lock together and building the components such as the fingerprint sensor, nfc tag and the 4x4 keypad. Also building the solenoid lock as the coding was sometimes in the wrong place and had to be redone.

Solution

Taking our time in making the code work and building the circuits as one small error with putting the pins in the breadboard will make everything not work hence taking our time will be better in the long run.

Use Case

A use case for the smart door lock can be for example a secure site used by a company that holds valuable information or money and the door handle will be used because of its optimal security.

THE PROCESS

PROTOTYPE DESIGN

The minimum hardware features needed for the product we plan on making would include fingerprint sensor, 4×4 keypad, one LED light to either flash green or red indicating whether the door is unlocked or locked and a solenoid lock to allow for the basic functioning of locking and unlocking. MVP – The minimum that our smart door handle will need is the fingerprint sensor, 4×4 keypad, NFC tag, extra key just in case other methods of access don’t work, two LED lights, Arduino micro controller and finally the 3d printed door handle where we will attach everything to. We are developing a smart door handle that will have enhanced security to remove the inconvenience of losing their keys to their homes and to prevent burglary.

Impact on the market

The most common type of lock worldwide is a simple latch lock produced in every single country worldwide. The smart door lock industry is an extremely niche sector in terms of the equipment and technology that we use not being very common. Other products available on the market that offer a smart solution for safety include video doorbells such as ring and nest but however, none that are like the product we are creating. The systematics implemented in our product including the biometrics and RFID tags offer a completely new, safer and convenient way to allowed only authorised personal through the door which means that it would be the first one on the market of this kind. This will boost our products likelihood of success due to the scarcity of competitors and rival products. The trajectory of our product is unlimited due to the demand worldwide, which would attract private investors, universities and big companies to pour their money in for a profitable outcome.

RESULTS

FINAL PRODUCT

To make this project a success our company need to secure some investors to cover initial; production costs, development costs, expenses and marketing costs that would be too expensive otherwise. but having a good well thought out plan will encourage more investors to invest money into our project and will make them feel secure in their investment and boost their confidence that their investment will be handled responsibly. This is because if we have a solid plan, it will show investors how we are using their money and show what they stand to gain from it. With a solid timeline they can keep track of goal and milestones and help mitigate any risks concerning their money. Picking the right investors can also help with networking as an ideal investor will be knowledgeable about this project and can help in terms of marketing to the right target audience, good manufacturers and even scaling the project up.
