WASTE WIZARDS

After countless discussions, meetings and brainstorming our group has decided to focus on advancing the system behind creating natural compost. Compost is a natural fertilizer created via garden and food wastage and is used to maximize growth in retaining soil moisture and providing nutrients to crops. The reason behind this is because every year over one billion tones of food waste is produced , which ends up in landfills causing mass pollution and a limited amount of space to decompose waste products that cannot be reused(Chew et al., 2018). Creating natural compost through using food wastage is an environmentally friendly method of organic waste management (Chew et al., 2018). The product which we have developed is a multipurpose bin which users can use different types of labelled bins. For example, one bin will be for waste like fruit peels, another will be used for tea bags and coffee grounds, and another for egg shells. The functionality of this product is that waste will be separated into labelled areas and can be added with compost, this results in a reduced amount of waste being sent to landfill sites and saves on costs like having to buy more chemical fertilisers. Other benefits which comes from the product is that it supports the environment, as waste is recycled and reused in a compost form. The inspiration for this product came from the vision of finding reusable ways of recycling certain waste and contributing to the environment.Key features of the smart compost bin:

-Automatic opening lids.

-Device informs user what section they have opened.

-A light appears to indicate that the section is full.

UN SUSTAINABILITY DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Empowered and Driven:
Delivering Solutions for Global Issues

Our multi-waste compost bin contributes to the 2nd and 13th goal, as using organic waste for compost will contribute to soil fertility and provide land which crops can be grown on, as well as reduce greenhouse gases which come from waste sites. The product also contributes to the 3rd and 15th goal, which composting contributes to healthy living environments, as using waste as compost will decrease the risks of improper waste disposal. Furthermore, it supports the preservation of natural habitats on land. In addition, the product also meets the 17th goal, which promotes community engagement and the creation of partnerships to improve the environment, which can inspire companies to work on environmentally friendly projects.

Moreover, our product also meets the 11th goal, which is sustainable cities and communities. By implementing composting, it reduces waste in urban areas, and promotes sustainable waste management, leading to healthier environment in urban areas. In addition, our product has also met the 12th goal, which is responsible consumption and production. Composting meets this goal as it is a responsible way of dealing with waste, due to the fact that waste is recycled/reused. This reduces the need for chemical fertilisers, which reduces expenses and saves time on having to buy fertiliser. Furthermore, as stated before, reduces the demand for landfill sites, as waste materials will be used for compost, instead of ending up in the landfill site.

DESIGN STORY

Challenges
``The LCD was not display the text we wanted due to a mistake in the code. Making our idea more innovative Coding errors Intergrating our circuit into the casing for the product ``
Solution
``To solve the issue of the LCD we will seek advice from peers that have greater knowledge than us in solving the issue. As a group we brainstormed we brainstomed ideas that can make our final product more interesting. Our coder decided to constantly re read his code to check for the errors and then reasherched via the internet to correct the syntax. We have ordered a casing large enough to fit the circuit in which will allow room to alos hide the exposed wires. ``
Use Case
``Use Case: Smart Compost Bin in a Residential Setting** 1. **Scenario:** - John, a homeowner, wants to reduce his household's environmental impact and improve his garden's soil quality. 2. **Problem:** - John currently throws away food scraps, contributing to landfill waste and missing an opportunity to cre-ate nutrient-rich compost for his garden. 3. **Solution:** - John purchases the Smart Compost Bin, an automated composting system designed for residential use. 4. **Use Case Steps:** a. **Initial Setup:** - John sets up the Smart Compost Bin in his backyard or kitchen, following the provided instructions. b. **Daily Use:** - Each day, John disposes of food scraps, such as fruit peels and vegetable leftovers, into the appropriate compartments of the Smart Compost Bin. - The bin's automated lids open based on the waste category, ensuring proper segregation. c. **Feedback and Monitoring:** - The Smart Compost Bin provides real-time feedback through audio cues and visual indicators, confirming the types of waste deposited and notifying John when compartments are full. d. **Composting Process:** - Over time, the Smart Compost Bin efficiently composts the organic waste, utilizing aeration, moisture con-trol, and microbial activity to accelerate decomposition. e. **Harvesting Compost:** - Periodically, John retrieves nutrient-rich compost from the bin's collection chamber, ready to be used in his garden to nourish plants and improve soil health. f. **Maintenance:** - John performs routine maintenance tasks, such as emptying composted material, cleaning the bin, and ensuring proper airflow and moisture levels for optimal composting conditions. g. **Long-Term Benefits:** - By using the Smart Compost Bin, John reduces household waste sent to landfills, produces valuable com-post for his garden, and contributes to a more sustainable lifestyle. 5. **Outcome:** - John enjoys a thriving garden with healthier plants, while also reducing his environmental footprint through responsible waste management with the Smart Compost Bin. ``

THE PROCESS

PROTOTYPE DESIGN

The product which we have developed is a smart bin. The product is initially a bin that is used for seprating different food wastage. The waste it would hold would be waste like fruit peels. The functionality of the product relies on a sensor which activates when a hand is swiped past it, which would then activate the bin lid resulting in the lid opening. The product also contains a LCD which activates when the bin is full which will alert the user that the bin is full. Another feature which our product has is a speaker which outputs an audio stating that the bin has been opened, this was added because it aids people that may have disabilities, and meets accessibility needs.

PLEDGE

Impact on the market

The product as a whole will impact the market in a positive way, this is because it aims to build positive habits with customers and promote them to look after the environment. This is what our product strives to achieve as it is products like ours which will benefit the environment. The product uses waste products like fruit and vegetable peels, bones and shells which aids in less of it ending up in the bin, resulting in it ending up in landfill sites and fossil fuels being used, which pollutes the environment.

RESULTS

FINAL PRODUCT

Overall the process of creating this product was very tough to tackle at first, as our group were struggling on ideas of making a product that is involved within helping the enviroment in terms of reducing food wastage, but as time went on we came up with the idea of creating a prouduct that essentially segregates waste, which then the foods can be used for other reasons. An example of the function is it being used as fertilizer or food condiments. In terms of work as a whole, the most difficult part was creating the physical circuit as at the begining there were a few errors within the coding which had set us back in progession and stopped certain features from working, like the LCD not displaying text.
